Cockatoo Community House, in partnership with Cardinia Shire and the Emerald Cockatoo Emergency Support Team, has been awarded a grant through the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing of Victoria (DFFH) under their Targeted Storm Recovery Funding Initiative.
The aim of the Hills Disaster Recovery Project is to build and promote community networks at a street/estate level to help mitigate risks when external telecoms are down.
This grant will support the community in building preparedness and resilience skills through training opportunities such as generator safety, chainsaw operation, food safety, access to insurance guidance and financial information.
The grant will also allow the purchase of community assets, including a trailer to make the Emergency Support Team’s 33kva generator mobile and resilience kits for vulnerable residents in case of an emergency.
